Soul Number — The Longing You Carry

Of all the numbers in a numerological profile, the soul number is the most private. It's calculated from the vowels in your birth name and describes not what you do or how others see you — but what you actually want, at the level beneath strategy and performance and what you think you should want.

How Is the Soul Number Calculated?

Extract only the vowels from your full birth name: A, E, I, O, U — and in Swedish/French contexts, also Å, Ä, Ö.

Vowel values in the Pythagorean system:

  • A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, O = 6, U = 3, Y = 7, Å = 1, Ä = 1, Ö = 6

Add the vowel values from your full birth name and reduce to a single digit, keeping 11, 22, and 33.

Why Vowels?

The vowels are the breath of a name — the open sounds, the parts that carry the melody. Consonants give a name its structure; vowels give it its feeling. In numerological tradition, vowels carry the inner life while consonants carry the outer.

What Does the Soul Number Reveal?

The soul number answers the question: what does this person need in order to feel truly at home in their own life?

Not what they achieve. Not what others see. What they, in their quietest moments, are reaching toward.

Soul number 1 longs for independence and originality — to be fully themselves without compromise. Soul number 2 longs for deep connection — to love and be loved in a way that feels safe. Soul number 3 longs for expression — to create and be received. Soul number 4 longs for security — a stable foundation that won't be pulled from beneath them. Soul number 5 longs for freedom — not running away, but genuine, embodied aliveness. Soul number 6 longs for harmony — to live in relationships and environments that feel whole. Soul number 7 longs for understanding — to know, deeply, what things actually mean. Soul number 8 longs for mastery — to be truly excellent at something that matters. Soul number 9 longs for meaning — to be part of something larger than their own story.

The Gap Between Soul and Life Path

Sometimes the soul number and the life path number align beautifully — what you want and what you're built to do point in the same direction. But often there's tension. A soul number 5 (longing for freedom) walking a life path 4 (built to build stable structures) will feel a constant pull in opposite directions.

This tension isn't a problem to solve — it's a creative friction that, when understood, becomes one of the most instructive things about a person.
